Cake Man Gets Just Desserts

April 20th, 2005

20rave.span.jpg The piece of cake pictured at right is quite possibly my favorite dessert food: red velvet cake. Nobody makes it better than Cake Man Raven, whose tiny shop is one of the best things about my neighborhood.

Today, the New York Times (link) profiled this truly towering figure, a man will be forever enshrined in the pantheon of cakemakers–and rock-solid neighbors.

Best detail from the story: The construction of Mr. Dennis’s most mammoth creation to date could easily lend itself to urban legend. It was the 7-foot-tall, 12-foot-long Brooklyn Bridge he made for the structure’s 120th anniversary two years ago. It required 20 people, five days of assembly and 22 hours of decorating.
