This year marks the twentieth anniversary of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s
Total Body Workout, one of the most important spoken word albums of our
time. Originally released on vinyl and cassette, this landmark recording has
been re-released on compact disc thanks to the good people at Sony
Music. If you’ve never had the pleasure, I encourage you to click one
of the streaming audio links below to experience a tiny sample of this truly
bizarre album. The future Governor Schwarzenegger leads his listeners through
a "sweatin’
to the 80’s" workout, barking out orders and offering tough-love encouragement
the whole time. "Up!" he shouts. "Down!" he bellows. "Squeeze
your buttocks!" he commands, obviously overcome by a ‘roid rage. It’s
hilarious, but also kind of frightening. Does a sequel to Total Body Workout
lurk somewhere deep in the mind of "the
people’s governor"? Will Californians be subjected to four years
of jumping jacks and toe-touches? Time will tell. One of the state’s programs
has a curiously Schwarzeneggeresque name.
